BUYER'S GUIDE TO LUXURY VINYL TILES (LVT)

WHAT IS LVT FLOORING?

Luxury vinyl flooring is a type of flooring that is primarily made of vinyl but designed to look and feel like certain materials, such as wood, ceramic, and stone. It has the benefits of vinyl, including durability and affordability, while presenting a luxurious aesthetic that comes with traditional flooring materials. Learn the basics of buying LVT with this guide so you can find the right type that fits your budget.

Our friendly staff have a huge knowledge across all types of flooring and can discuss the best LVT brands and options for your needs and budget when you visit our showroom. Once you’ve made your choice of LVT, we can then schedule the fitting. We offer a complete LVT fitting service for your convenience but if you prefer to fit it yourself we can arrange to just deliver instead.

WHY CHOOSE LUXURY VINYL TILES?

You can get high-quality LVT for a fraction of expensive hardwood or marble flooring without having to worry as much about maintenance for scratches, water damage, or longevity. Well-maintained LVT flooring can last for 10 to 20 years and often longer. Advances in LVT technology have also made premium luxury vinyl flooring to be nearly indistinguishable from wood planks and stone tiles.

There are LVT variations to consider depending on what you will use LVT for.

LVT AND LVP

LVT is the acronym for luxury vinyl tile, while LVP is the acronym for luxury vinyl plank. Both are practically the same in their composition and general purpose. The key difference is that LVT is used to simulate the aesthetic of traditional tile materials like stone, ceramic, and marble, while LVP is used to simulate hardwood flooring.

PVC

Luxury vinyl flooring is typically made of a strong and flexible plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Compared to its rigid core counterparts, PVC luxury vinyl is softer, making it more comfortable to walk on. It is also the more affordable option, but with the trade-off that it is not as hard-wearing.

SPC

Stone polymer composite (SPC) is a type of dense, ultra-thin rigid core luxury vinyl that boasts excellent durability. Its indentation resistance and stability allow it to withstand large and heavy furniture and high foot traffic. Water damage is not a concern for SPC luxury vinyl as well, as it is 100% waterproof.

WPC

Wood polymer composite (WPC) takes on more of the qualities of wood, making it softer and quieter than SPC. You can get WPC luxury vinyl at varying ranges of thickness, so you can go higher if you want more stability in your flooring. It is also highly water resistant unlike traditional hardwood plank flooring.

While there may be many LVT brands to choose from, we have narrowed down the choices to three of the best you can find in Bristol.

AMTICO

Unique and authentic luxury vinyl flooring with a storied history of craftsmanship are what you can expect from Amtico. The company has over 50 years of experience in creating high-quality, designer LVT, taking pride in its pioneering British excellence that has expanded into a global brand. Rest assured that you will only get beautiful, long-lasting luxury vinyl flooring, whether you pick a striking abstract design, an elegant stone style, or classic wood planks.

KARNDEAN

Achieve the classy vintage looks and texture of slate, marble, and timber for your flooring at an affordable price with the wide selection of luxury vinyl offerings from Karndean. Their collections also extend to more eye-catching, modern patterns that fit either residential or commercial spaces. Karndean have been in the industry for over 25 years, and they continue to innovate with LVT R&D to meet the flooring needs of today’s discerning clients.

MODULEO

If you are looking specifically for the best luxury vinyl planks, you can rely on Moduleo’s exquisite collections of fine LVP. Their products recreate the natural textures of genuine wood while bringing in the strength and sturdiness of vinyl to the mix. The planks are large with varying patterns and are easy to fit. Explore the vast range of visual expressions in their catalogue, from understated to bold designs.

Depending on the type of installation method of your choice of LVT, you can get it done yourself easily.

INTERLOCKING

Also known as click and lock, the interlocking method of LVT flooring installation lets you simply put together the tiles on top of your floor and they will click into each other’s grooves. You don’t need any adhesive to keep them in place, as their weight will keep them on the ground. It’s considered as a “floating floor”, since the tiles don’t actually stick to the subfloor.

LOOSE LAY

Much like the interlocking method, there is no adhesive required for the loose lay method. Each tile has a specialised high-grip backing that holds it in place when laid on the floor. The one tradeoff to its ease of installation is that the tiles may be displaced if they’re put in a room with high traffic.

PEEL AND STICK

Another simple method of installing LVT, peel and stick tiles come with an adhesive covering. Just peel away the cover at the bottom of each tile, then press the tiles down onto the floor. Avoid using this method for high-traffic areas though, because the tiles can be removed with plenty of activity.

GLUE DOWN

When you need to ensure your LVT stays in place even with a lot of foot traffic, take the glue down option. Each tile is secured with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that is applied on the floor. Stability is guaranteed with this method, although you need to take extra care when doing this yourself. Once the glue hardens, it can be very difficult to remove the tiles.

PROFESSIONAL LVT FITTING

LVT may be easy to install, but a single mistake can ruin the beauty of your new luxury vinyl flooring and take more of your time and effort to redo the project. Leave it to the LVT professionals here at CW Jones. We can do the fitting for you!

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) FAQs

Got a question about LVT flooring? We’re here to help.
  • How often should I clean LVT flooring?

Sweep LVT flooring daily, especially if it’s set in a high traffic area. Getting rid of dust and dirt every day with a dry sweep keeps the floor from getting scratched and scuffed. Mop up spills immediately; you don’t want stains to form and stick to the floor. Deep cleaning should be done at least twice a month.

  • Can LVT flooring get damaged?

LVT flooring is highly durable and waterproof, so it can last for a long time.

However, it can still get scratched, scuffed, and dented. It can also suffer from discolouration if exposed to sunlight for too long or cleaned with harsh chemicals.

  • Can LVT flooring be repaired?

For simple repairs we suggest using the manufacturers cleaning/repair kits. However, a completely broken tile can’t be repaired. You will have to replace it. This is possible if your tiles are only glued down separately. Click lock tiles are generally installed from the wall, and you’d have to take off all the tiles just to replace what’s broken.

  • Will CW Jones remove my old flooring?

Yes, we can remove your old flooring for you prior to fitting at an additional cost.

  • What’s the difference between LVT and LVP?

LVT is luxury vinyl tiles while LVP is luxury vinyl planks. LVT takes the form of traditional stone flooring with individual tiles. LVP takes the form of wooden planks. Both are basically made of the same material. Their only difference being their shape to accommodate the two classic flooring aesthetics; stone or ceramic tiles, and hardwood planks.

  • Can I install LVT over my current floors?

You can install LVT over your existing subfloor, however, it is a time-consuming process where one mistake can damage the overall look of your new flooring and reduce its longevity. We recommend you take advantage of our fitting service so it is done with professional rigour, ensuring the LVT lasts. You just need to choose your perfect luxury vinyl tiles in store, and then leave the hard work of installation to us.

  • How to measure for LVT flooring?

Making sure you order the right amount of luxury vinyl tiles is obviously hugely important when it comes to drawing up a budget for your new flooring. Start by drawing a simple top-down sketch of the shape of your room where you plan on installing LVT flooring. Take note of the doorways. Use a tape measure to find out the longest length and the widest width of the room then write down the measurements in metres. Multiply the length with the width to get the room’s area in metres squared. To account for wastage, add 10% to your room’s area, which you can easily do by multiplying your room’s area by 1.1.

At CW Jones, we also offer a free measuring service with every purchase of our LVT flooring.
