What is a handmade Carpet?

The weaving of rugs is an ancient craft which according to research dates back to 7000 B.C.

A handmade carpet is made using a specially designed loom and hand-knotted manually with most prevalently wool. Machine manufactured carpets are much more common in today’s world and most often use synthetic material or a proportion of synthetic material when they are made.

Despite recent year’s technical advancements and developments, handmade carpets are still made in the same way as they were hundreds of years ago. The specialist art and skill of weaving a carpet have been passed onto many generations over the centuries, however, the art is now fading due to the ease of buying and the cost of machine woven carpets.

How can you tell the difference between handmade and machine-made rugs?

It is difficult to tell the difference between a handmade, hand-knotted, and machine made carpet unless you have a huge amount of carpet knowledge. The fringe on a handmade rug is more normally made from the warp threads of a handmade rug, and the fringe of a machine-made rug is generally sewn onto the end to make it appear handmade. A handmade rugs edges are overcast by hand compared to a machine-made rug where the edges are stitched by the machine.

What is a handmade carpet made from?

Handmade carpets and rugs can be made from more commonly wool but also silk, jute and other natural materials. Silk is sometimes used on the outlines of a handmade wool carpet or used to highlight any patterns to further enhance it and give it the detail and style you are looking for. Handmade carpets and rugs will last many generations if they are made from good quality materials, by a trained weaver and if they are properly maintained and looked after.

How do you make a handmade carpet?

Handmade carpets and rugs are made on a specially designed loom and are knotted by hand. The size of the loom depends on the size of the carpet and the weaving is done from the bottom to the top. The weaver inserts the “knots” into the foundation of the rug and they are tied by hand which makes up the “pile” of the rug. It is an ancient art and one that takes a huge amount of time and effort to be an expert in.

Why is a handmade carpet more expensive than a machine-made carpet?

Handmade carpets and rugs are more expensive due to the materials used (wool, silk, jute and other natural materials), the time it takes to make them, the skill that is needed to produce them and the beautiful designs and patterns that can be created. Handmade carpets give a home a stylish and luxurious feel and can last for 100’s of years if they are looked after and maintained.

How do you take care of and clean a handmade carpet?

To maintain your handmade carpet and to prevent the build-up of damaging dust and grit you should brush it regularly with an old-fashioned type broom which has natural bristles and only use a vacuum with a suction-only setting.

Avoid placing heavy furniture on your handmade carpet and place casters under any furniture feet.

Avoid walking on your handmade carpet when you have shoes on.

If you have any spills on your handmade carpet quickly blot the spill with kitchen paper soaking up any liquid until it is dry. Scrape any solids off the carpet with a plastic utensil and use a solution of carpet shampoo and warm water along with a teaspoonful of white vinegar to gently blot away any stains that are left. Dry the area as quickly as you can, using kitchen roll/towel and then before the carpet is completely dry carefully comb the pile in its natural direction to remove any matting.

Why would you have a handmade carpet?

Hand-made carpets are amazing, beautiful works of art and each one is unique. You may have a period home that will suit a handmade carpet or want to decorate a room in your home to make it different from the rest. A handmade carpet will feel luxurious and will really stand out wherever it is. Handmade carpets and rugs will last hundreds or years if well looked after and can be passed on to family generations.

What colours are available for a handmade carpet?

There are thousands of styles, colours and patterns available when it comes to handmade carpets and they really are unique and distinctive.
