Axminster Carpets have been employing their traditional pioneered method since they began, using only the very best raw, natural materials to craft their carpeting. Their wool is selected from British sheep breeds, giving their carpets an exceptional level of durability and warmth in the home.

Once they’ve hand-picked their wool, it’s then spun into yarns, ready to be woven into one of their spectacular designs. Axminster Carpets also use a specialist backing crafted from natural cotton and jute, woven into neat lines to create very tiny holes to weave the yarn into.

To ensure their carpets always deliver on perfection, Axminster Carpets constantly inspect their flooring at every stage of the production process, meaning no carpet leaves the factory unless it’s passed each step at a satisfactory level. Today, Axminster remains the only company to source, spin, and dye its own yarn, as well as weave their own carpets.

Axminster Carpets is also dedicated to ensuring their production promotes ethical standards with sustainable practices. Not only is wool a naturally recyclable and biodegradable material, but Axminster’s entire site is managed in an environmentally sensitive manner to minimise waste, saving on energy at every opportunity they can and recycling all their waste yarns into carpet underlay.

As Britain’s oldest and most well renowned carpet manufacturer, Axminster Carpets offer the epitome of quality, weaving centuries of tradition and skill into every one of their luxury carpets. Today, Axminster’s production process remains almost identical to their original method of 250 years ago - just with more advanced machines!

Woven carpets are made by weaving their hand-sourced yarn all the way through the backing fibres, before removing it from the loom and coating the back with latex to secure all the tufted fibres into their place. The Axminster weaving method involves cutting the loom into U-shaped tufts, allowing for a never-ending choice of colours and designs. This method also requires eight hours to make just one roll, compared to only one hour for an average tufted carpet, which is reflected in the quality of the Axminster ranges.

From natural earth tones, to classic, traditional patterns, to contemporary, durable designs, look no further than our collection of Axminster Carpets. With a carpet fit for every room, Axminster’s wool-rich ranges are gentle, comforting, and cosy, offering a tranquil aesthetic while coating your home in a naturally insulating warmth that will always stand the test of time.

In 1755, Thomas Whitty began making the original Axminster method carpets at his own factory in the Devon town of Axminster. A pioneering method, these carpets were used to carpet places such as Chatsworth House and Brighton Pavilion, and were even bought by King George III and Queen Charlotte.

182 years later, Harry Dutfield, a carpet manufacturer, got chatting to a vicar from the West Country while on a train journey, who told Harry that no carpets had been made in Axminster for a long time due to a fire that had destroyed Thomas’ factory. By 1937, Harry had re-launched carpet manufacturing in Axminster.

Today, Axminster Carpets is still carrying on the tradition, offering luxury and quality carpets for homes, hotels, prestigious global airline crafts such as the British Airways and Virgin planes, and even Royal households - a carpet used to re-enact history on their 250 year anniversary now resides at Clarence House, the home of HRH The Prince of Wales.

Their biggest contract to date was marked by their re-carpeting of 825 vehicles for the South Western Railway, giving carriages a beautiful solution carpeted from premium wool blend that has been able to withstand the incredibly high amount of footfall the trains see every day.
