Ulster Carpets is extremely passionate about reducing their impact on the environment, without compromising on the quality and performance of their carpets. The natural wool and jute used to produce their carpets is entirely renewable, able to regrow in just 12 months, meaning they are able to maintain a sustainable supply to fund their manufacturing process.

Ulster also makes sure to reuse materials like cardboard boxes and tubes, and 100% of their waste caused from manufacturing is recycled or devoted to energy recovery purposes, rather than going to landfill.

As part of their ongoing regeneration project, Ulster have invested in a state-of-the-art dyehouse in order to support a complete switch from hank to package dyeing. Using 40% less water, 25% less heat, and 5-10% less chemicals per kilogram of yarn processed, Ulster’s new package dyeing process also utilises a heat exchange system that reuses water from the previous cycle to heat the next batch of water used.

Reduced pipe runs, new and improved boilers, more effective heat exchangers, and energy efficient lighting have also been introduced to minimise Ulster Carpets’ carbon footprint.

Ulster’s loop pile ranges are manufactured with 100% British and New Zealand wool in Denmark. Through working in partnership with Wools of New Zealand, Ulster have created three 100% New Zealand wool loop pile Laneve ranges, demonstrated in its Open Spaces collection. These use wool that can be traced back to the individual farmers who cultivated it in New Zealand via a fully integrated supply chain, always utilising the highest standards of environmental management and animal welfare. Ulster has even developed their own unique weaving technology, PSYLO.

Wool has long been praised for its naturally insulative properties, helping to keep your home warm whilst also acting as an effective noise absorber. The natural structure of the fibre means it does not easily ignite, melt, or release noxious fumes, making it the ideal choice for busy homes with active families, kids, or pets.

It has also been shown to improve air quality in the home, as it naturally absorbs humidity and volatile organic compounds. This makes wool a great choice for those with asthma or allergies as it acts as a non-allergenic fibre, trapping airborne dust in its top layer.

An extremely durable material, wool also has a high level of elasticity due to the fibre’s natural crimp, meaning it can stretch to up to 30% of its length and still revert back to its original form. Not only does this make wool an extremely long-lasting material, but it minimises the risk of colour change, meaning your carpet will stay looking fresh and bright for years to come.

Founded in Northern Ireland by George Walter Wilson, Ulster Carpets is still privately owned by the Wilson family to this day. They are now the largest single site producer of Axminster and Wilton carpets the world over.

Each and every step of the manufacturing process is carried out within the UK, from processing the wool at Ulster Yarns in Dewsbury, to dying and weaving the wool at Castleisland, ensuring complete quality control of their product from start to finish.
