BUYER'S GUIDE TO CARPETS

The versatility of cushioned vinyl flooring opens you up to a world of possibilities for interior design. However, it can also be overwhelming with the amount of choices you can make. This buyer’s guide should hopefully make the process easier.

WHAT IS CUSHIONED VINYL FLOORING?

If you are looking for inexpensive, long-lasting flooring that can take on a variety of visual designs and feel good on your feet, cushioned vinyl flooring is what you need. It is composed of a dense vinyl core, a decorative print layer, a transparent protective wear layer at the very top, and a foam cushion layer at the bottom to provide insulation and comfort.

You can have vinyl flooring emulate traditional materials such as wood, stone, and porcelain. Because it is hard-wearing, water-resistant, and generally easy to clean, you can expect high-quality vinyl flooring to last for up to 25 years.

There are three major formats of cushioned vinyl flooring  to consider, each with slight differences:

PLANK

Cushioned vinyl plank flooring is designed to look like wood planks for that warm, vintage aesthetic. This type of cushioned vinyl flooring is perfect for rooms where you want that specific wood look but have to worry about moisture. You can also find vinyl planks with a stone design.

Installation is typically done where each plank is individually fitted via glue-down, click-and-lock, or a floating system. It may be time-consuming, but the process is relatively simple for DIY purposes. Underlay is sometimes packaged with vinyl plank flooring to make it even faster to lay it over existing floors.

SHEET

As the most affordable format, cushioned vinyl sheet flooring is a popular choice. It is sold in large sheets that you can lay over floors easily. You don’t have to worry about seams, unlike planks or tiles. However, its seamless quality does make it slightly less realistic looking, even with a wood or stone print design. You also have to be very careful about cutting vinyl sheets. Make a mistake, and there’s no repairing without having more obvious flaws in the flooring. It’s much more advisable to use a professional to fit vinyl sheet flooring (something we provide here at CW Jones).

TILES

If you want to have the cool visual design of stone floors but would rather not spend a fortune on marble or granite similarly expensive materials, cushioned vinyl tile flooring is the way to go. You can get these tiles grout-free if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of cleaning dirt build-up in between tiles. For a more realistic looking tile floor, you can also get groutable vinyl tiles. Compared to actual stone tiles, this type of vinyl flooring is more comfortable underfoot. Cushioned vinyl tile flooring comes pre-cut into individual tiles with adhesives, which makes installation fairly straightforward.

The flexibility of cushioned vinyl flooring means that you can have it in just about any part of your home’s interiors.

LIVING ROOM

Because of how softer cushioned vinyl feels compared to wood or stone flooring, it works great in the living room where people relax and entertain guests. You can go for a muted granite design to emphasise the space, or opt for a more energetic vibe with patterned tiles.

DINING ROOM

Whether you’re enjoying a nice quiet breakfast with the family or hosting a lively dinner party, you have to account for spills getting all over the dining room floor. Cushioned vinyl flooring tiles are thankfully easy to clean, and you can choose from all sorts of stimulating designs.

KITCHEN

With how busy and messy cooking can get, cushioned vinyl flooring in the kitchen is a blessing. You can take care of spills quickly, and you can wet the floors with a mop without worry when you need to get rid of hard-to-remove stains. Moving around from your oven to your stove to your refrigerator will be easy on your feet as well.

BATHROOM

You don’t have to be restricted to a handful of styles when you go for cushioned vinyl flooring in your bathroom. Whatever design you choose, you can get it waterproofed to withstand moisture, install underfloor heating to keep your feet warm even in the winter, and get non-slip cushioned vinyl flooring to help prevent accidents.

BEDROOM

Not only does cushioned vinyl flooring feel comfortable underfoot, its sound insulation properties minimise noise when you’re walking on it, making vinyl flooring a real consideration for your bedroom flooring.

The ease-of-use of cushioned vinyl flooring extends to some of its laying methods.

LOOSE LAY

With high-grip backing on every plank or tile, you can just place each piece on the floor for installation and don’t have to worry about applying adhesives or using locks. However, “loose lay” means the flooring can be displaced with heavy foot traffic.

GLUE DOWN

For the most stable cushion vinyl flooring installation, the glue down method makes use of a powerful adhesive to directly lay the vinyl on the subfloor. This is typically reserved for sheet vinyl and we recommend you get professionals to do the job for you.

Cushioned Vinyl Flooring FAQs

Got a question about cushioned vinyl flooring? We’re here to help.
  • What’s the difference between vinyl and luxury vinyl?

Luxury vinyl, or LVT, is the premium version of standard cushioned vinyl flooring. LVT is sturdier, longer lasting, allows for more detail and realism in its design, and because of all these advantages, it is more expensive than standard vinyl.

  • Can vinyl flooring be repaired?

Yes, vinyl flooring can be repaired. Clean the area first of dirt or debris to prevent further damage. For minor tears, you can apply vinyl flooring adhesive under the tear then apply pressure onto it by leaving something heavy on top.

For larger tears, you need extra vinyl flooring with the design that matches the damaged area. Place the replacement on top of the tear and align it with the pattern. Cut through both layers, remove the damaged part, then apply the replacement with adhesive.

  • Which flooring is best for me, vinyl or lino?

Both vinyl and linoleum are affordable and hassle-free, water-resistant flooring options. Vinyl has much more variety in design and is the more economical option, while linoleum lasts much longer and is the more environmentally friendly option because it’s made entirely of natural materials.

  • Is vinyl flooring better than laminate?

Vinyl and laminate flooring share a lot of good qualities. They both replicate the looks of premium materials while costing much less, are durable and easy to clean, and can last up to 25 years with proper care. The key difference is that vinyl is more water-resistant than laminate because it’s synthetic and not wood, so it’s the obvious choice for rooms with plenty of moisture.
